Description

Fletcher Moss Art Gallery, formerly known as the Old Parsonage, is a house turned art gallery located on Stenner Lane in Didsbury, Manchester. It likely dates from the early 19th century and has been enlarged and altered over time. The building features roughcast on brick with slate roofs across three levels. It has a double-depth linear plan oriented east-west, consisting of a long main range with end bays designed as crosswings and an addition at the east end.

The structure is two storeys high with eight windows arranged in a pattern of 1:4:1+2, with the end bays being taller. The entrance is positioned slightly left of center and includes a wrought-iron porch topped with a swept lead roof, leading to a doorway framed by 17th-century oak jambs and door. The ground floor showcases three distinct wooden canted bay windows: the leftmost is large and flat-roofed with leaded glazing, the next is five-sided with a hipped slate roof and leaded glazing featuring tracery, and the third, to the right of the porch, has a hipped roof of red tiles and glazing extending from the ground to the eaves. In the right-hand wing, there is a tripartite casement window with hooped glazing bars, and all these windows are fitted with internal shutters.

On the first floor, there are sashed windows with Gothic glazing bars, all square except for those in the right wing and its addition. The end bays have hipped roofs with projecting eaves and various tall chimneys. The rear and interior of the building have not been inspected. Historically, this building was the home of Alderman Fletcher Moss, a Justice of the Peace, local historian, and art connoisseur, whose collection of watercolour paintings, including works by Turner, became the foundation of the gallery's collection.
