Description

The screen wall and lodge cottages date from 1855 and are part of the former workhouse, later known as Meneage Hospital. Constructed of local freestone ashlar to the front, granite ashlar for the piers and parapets, with rubble walls and granite dressings elsewhere, the buildings feature dry slate roofs, now treated with bitumen. The design consists of two blocks flanking a carriageway, linked by an entrance gateway, with an axial wing extending to the rear of the left-hand block.

The screen and entrance front is single-storied, with three bays separated by pilaster piers. Each bay originally contained a tall, narrow window with a projecting key and impost block, retaining its original four-pane sashes. The central bay features a large, round-arched doorway with moulded details, an entablature, and a moulded cornice to the parapet. The rear elevations include openings framed by monoliths. The left-hand block has four original hornless 12-pane sashes, and a coped gable with a central round-arched window featuring a tripartite sash and a spoked concentric fanlight. The interior has not been inspected. The screen wall and lodge cottages are integral to the overall design of the hospital group.
