Description

No. 62A and the attached outbuilding is a house dating from the 18th century to early 19th century, with extensions added in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed from uncoursed local rubble and features a scantle slate roof. The right end stack is made of 18th-century stone, finished in 19th-century brick, while the left end stack is entirely brick. The earliest part of the house consists of two units, with the main heated room located to the right of a narrow stair hall, which may have originally served as a service room. A 19th-century service wing has been added at right angles to the rear, and there is a later 19th-century two-room extension on the left.

The house is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The earliest phase, which has quoining on the left, features timber lintels above early 19th-century horizontal-sliding sash windows, which are a rare survival and include glazing bars. There is a 20th-century door to the left, topped by a large 20th-century gabled hood. The left extension has timber lintels over horned 2:2-pane sashes and a 20th-century door.

While the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have 19th-century plank and panelled doors, as well as plank and muntin screens flanking the stair. There is an 18th-century open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and split principal rafters, indicating a probable A-frame roof from the 18th or early 19th century. The similar roof continues over the outhouse to the right, which is built from the same materials and features a full-height front doorway and a rear outshut. This building is an interesting example of a small "backlands" tenement dwelling.
