Description

The entrance lodge to Manchester Southern Cemetery was built in 1879 and is designed in the Gothic style. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs topped with red cockscomb ridge tiles. The building is two storeys high and includes a square tower. The tower has a square-headed doorway set beneath a segmental-pointed arch, with a string course that runs out to the left. Above the doorway is a very narrow lancet window, and near the top of the tower are two decorative bands. The tower also features a low wooden arcaded belfry and a slated spire roof with swept eaves and a weathervane. To the left of the tower is a gable that includes a canted bay window on the ground floor and a 2-light sashed window above, both situated under a 2-centred relieving arch. There is a wing to the right of the tower, and ridge chimneys are present on the roof. The lodge forms a group with the entrance gateway and the Registrar's office nearby.
