Description

The Cemetery Lodge is an entrance lodge to Box Cemetery, built in 1857 by Poulton and Woodman of Reading. It features crazed rubble banded in ashlar with a stone tiled roof, sawtooth ridge, coped gables, and a triple ridge stack. The building is one and a half storeys tall and showcases highly ornate Gothic architecture. The openings are accentuated with alternating rubble and ashlar voussoirs. The gable end facing the road has a pierced star in the apex, a two-light pointed window on the first floor, and a two-light ground floor window with keyhole main lights and a blank circle above, all under a segmental-pointed voussoir course that continues on either side over small triangular ashlar panels with a pierced star. There are two small flanking buttresses. The west front features a projecting steeply gabled porch to the left with an iron finial, a pointed arched doorway, and two very small lights on the side walls. To the right, there is a single keyhole light and a two-light window similar to the one on the north wall's ground floor. The south end wall has a two-light pointed head window, and a similar window is present on the gabled east side projection.
