Description
The South Lodge of Sunderland Cemetery, built around 1858, serves as a lodge and office for the municipal cemetery. It is constructed from snecked limestone with sandstone ashlar dressings and features wrought-iron door fittings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and includes stone gable copings and ashlar chimneys. The building has an H-plan layout, with the right wing being longer and an intruded porch.
Designed in the Gothic style, the lodge is a single storey with three sets of windows. The gabled porch, located at the angle between the cross wing and the right wing, has a plain stone surround with alternate block jambs leading to a boarded door that features elaborate hinges and a low pointed arch head. The gable of the porch is adorned with stone coping and a fleur-de-lys finial.
The front gables of the cross wings have canted bay windows, with the right bay projecting. These windows are framed by cusped pointed-arched stone surrounds and contain renewed sashes beneath hipped roofs made of overlapping stone. Between the wings, there is a single sash window that has a flat stone lintel, alternate block jambs, and a sloping stone sill.
All gables are designed similarly to that of the porch and rest on stone kneelers. The right return of the right wing gable features a pentice bell-cote positioned below the eaves, located to the left of the porch. The roof is topped with octagonal stone chimneys that have chamfer stops at their rectangular bases. There is also a single sash window on the right return that faces the drive.
