NZ45SW RYHOPE ROAD 920-1/7/195 (West side) South lodge of Sunderland Cemetery

Lodge and office to municipal cemetery. c1858. Snecked limestone with sandstone ashlar dressings and wrought-iron door fittings; Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings and ashlar chimneys. H-plan with right wing longer, right extension and intruded porch. Gothic style. One storey, 1:1:1 windows. Gabled porch in angle between cross wing and right wing has plain stone surround with alternate block jambs to boarded door with elaborate hinges low pointed arch head; gable has stone coping with fleur-de-lys finial. Canted bay windows in front gables of cross wings, the right projecting, have cusped pointed-arched stone surrounds to renewed sashes under hipped roofs of overlapping stone. Flat stone lintel, alternate block jambs and sloping stone sill to single sash between wings. All gables similar to that of porch and on stone kneelers. Right return of right wing gable has pentice bell-cote below eaves and to left of porch. Roof has octagonal stone chimneys with chamfer stops to rectangular base. Single sash on right return facing drive.
