Description
The entrance gates, piers, and front railings to Sunderland Cemetery were built around 1858 and are made of walls, gate piers, railings, and gates in a municipal cemetery setting. The walls are constructed from snecked limestone with ashlar coping, while the piers are made of ashlar stone. The wrought-iron gates and railings feature a design that includes railings on chamfered ashlar coping along the street front of the cemetery, with quadrant sections flanking the entrance defined by piers. The tall chamfered square piers at the vehicle and pedestrian entrances have stepped plinths and moulded cornices topped with high hipped overlapping stone coping. There are blank shields set in panels on the front of the piers. The railings have cusped diagonal bracing between them, with trefoil leaves springing from the uprights above the bracing and as finials on the uprights. The vehicle and pedestrian gates are designed in a similar style, featuring low bracing and trefoil leaves that form dog bars.
