Description
The north entrance to Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, including its gates, piers, and railings, was built in 1856 by Thomas Moore. It features ashlar piers and dwarf walls, along with cast-iron piers and gates, as well as wrought-iron railings. The entrance is flanked by serpentine painted ashlar dwarf walls with chamfered coping. Tall octagonal gate piers are made from open panels and adorned with decorative central and top bands, topped with high swept octagonal coping that has brattished decoration and high bud finials. The railings have lozenge-shaped bud finials and a quatrefoil-pierced dog bar band. The gates also feature similar finials and a central band. The entrance railings end in painted ashlar octagonal piers with brattished ornament on high ogee-moulded coping.
