Description

The South-East Lodge at the south entrance to Bishopwearmouth Cemetery was built in 1856 by Thomas Moore. It is constructed from English garden wall bond brick with an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring fishscale decoration, stone gable copings, cast-iron cresting, and brick and ashlar chimneys. The building has a T-plan layout with an extruded porch and is a single storey with 1:1 windows.

The elevation facing the drive includes a central gabled porch with a boarded door and a panel above in a high pointed arch, surrounded by a moulded stone frame. The stone-coped gable features a high conical finial. To the left, there is a 2-light mullioned and transomed window. The gabled cross wing on the right has a renewed window in a chamfered stone surround and a narrow window adorned with a fleur-de-lys finial on a high pointed dripmould at the gable peak, along with stone gable copings and high pointed finials.

On the left return facing Chester Road, there is a mullioned and transomed canted bay window with a hipped roof, as well as a gable window similar to the one facing the drive. The steeply pitched roof, which has lost some cresting, features bands of fishscale decoration and includes two ridge chimneys.
