Description
The East Building of Barnes School is a school constructed around 1900. It features bright red brick with terracotta dressings and a slate roof. The building is symmetrical, standing two storeys high with a window arrangement of 2:2:3:5:3:2:2.
The left corner has a pentice roof over a two-storey porch, supported by thick terracotta columns on a brick base, leading up to the entrance doors. There is one window beside the porch and two above it. The central section boasts five full-height round-arched recesses, separated by finialled lesenes, which contain large windows. The lower windows are square-headed with panelled aprons, while the upper ones are round-headed with arcaded brick-panelled aprons, topped by a corbel table.
The flanking sections have three windows on each floor, with the lower windows featuring long triple terracotta keys and the upper windows stepped under a central straight dripmould below the raised segmental head of a shaped gable. Stair towers between the flanking sections and the end bays have two small windows below four on the ground floor, and a further four with arcaded aprons leading to a central pair below a top single round-headed light in an arched brick panel beneath the roof parapet. Most windows are designed with mullions and transoms, featuring upper glazing bars, while the round-headed windows have full glazing bars.
The building has hipped roofs over the entrance bays, high swept pyramids with lucarnes over the adjacent towers, cross ridges to the gables, and a long central roof with five hipped dormers and a tapered high ridge ventilator topped with a dome.
