Description

The Shena Simon Sixth-Form College is a school, dating from 1897 to 1901, with extensions constructed around 1911. It is built of red brick with terracotta dressings and has a Welsh slate roof with brick wall stacks. The building is designed in a French Renaissance style. It comprises a large rectangular block extending along Whitworth Street, with a further block projecting forward to the street corner. The main block is four storeys high with a basement, and has a five-window front. The projecting section has a three-window front. The windows are mullion and transom style, with terracotta detailing. The facade is embellished with pilasters, string courses, a cornice, and a parapet. A central window projects and features a curved pediment. A projecting roof feature incorporates a square balustrade and a round lantern. A curved and polygonal tower rises at the street corner, topped by an open octagonal drum with a tall roof and an open lantern. The street-facing facade has twenty-four windows, with projecting elements emphasized by pediments, gables, wall stacks, and a pavilion roof with ornamental cresting. The rear facade is similar.
