Description
The Institute of Science and Technology, part of the University of Manchester, is a university institute built between 1895 and 1912 by the architects Spalding and Cross. It features a red brick exterior with red sandstone and terracotta dressings, topped with slate mansard roofs. The building has a large rectangular plan that includes two internal courtyards and is designed in the French Renaissance style. It consists of five storeys, a basement, and attics. The lower four storeys are adorned with tiered mullion and transom windows, rusticated pilasters, richly moulded aprons, and entablatures, all topped with elaborate shaped gables. The central section projects with a gabled bay and features an arched entrance. The side facing Whitworth Street has additional projecting gabled bays, one of which is topped with a cupola. The building is further enhanced by moulded bands and an eaves cornice, along with brick chimney stacks. The forecourt is enclosed by terracotta balustrading that extends across both facades, and the rear of the building is similar in design. The interior has not been inspected.
