Description
Orient House is a shipping or packing warehouse built in 1914 by G.H. Goldsmith. It features a steel frame with a facade made of white matt-glazed terracotta and sides of rectilinear glass curtain walling, with the roof concealed. The building has a large rectangular plan that runs parallel to the street and is designed in a classical style, despite its otherwise functional nature.
It stands nine storeys tall over a basement, but the facade presents six storeys with attics. The composition is symmetrical with a ratio of 1:7:1 bays, where the ends project slightly forward. The ground and first floors are designed with rustic channelled rustication and cornices, while the next three storeys form a seven-bay giant colonnade featuring fluted Ionic columns and pilastered end bays. Above the colonnade is an enriched frieze, followed by a low fifth floor with a prominent modillioned cornice and various decorative elements. The ends have full attic storeys, with set-back attics over the center and tall chimneys.
Entrances are located in the third and seventh bays, each with projected doorcases that have shallow pediments on consoles and acroteria on top. The building has three-light windows on all floors, with those in the end bays mostly featuring mullions and cornices, while the colonnade windows are steel framed and canted on the first two levels. The interior has not been inspected.
