Description

Regency House with Barclays Bank is a shipping or packing warehouse, now serving as a bank and offices, built around 1880-1890 and altered since. It features an iron frame with sandstone ashlar and red brick dressings, and has a trapeziform plan on an island site, with a loading bay on the west side. The design is functional and almost devoid of style, standing five storeys over a basement. The façade has six bays plus a three-window canted corner to the right, with a massive punch-dressed plinth and piers at the ground floor, a frieze above, and banded brick piers on the upper floors. The main cornice has a simplified Lombard frieze, and there is a low parapet with square pedestals or chimneys over each pier, along with an octagonal lantern over the corner, which was likely originally domed.

The doorway is located in the right-hand corner, featuring a segmental pediment on coupled brackets. There is a wide segmental-headed archway at the third bay and a shouldered square loading bay entrance at the left end. Each bay on every floor has 2-light windows that diminish in height, all with a central square pillar and most with 9-pane glazing. The right-hand return to Sackville Street has six bays in a matching style, but includes segmental archways at the third, fourth, and sixth bays, with a 2-light window above the sixth bay at the first floor, featuring a pilastered stone surround, a decorated lintel, and a moulded cornice. The six-bay west side is similar but simpler, with a fire escape at the fifth bay. The interior has not been inspected.
