Description

The Rochdale Canal Lock Number 87, located to the east of Princess Street, features a cast-iron footbridge beside the street. Built between 1804 and 1805 for the Rochdale Canal Company, the lock has been restored and is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with wooden gates. The chamber is 14 feet wide and has pairs of gates at both ends, along with a ladder in the center of the south side. The cast-iron footbridge crosses the lower entry and has panelled sides. This lock is the fourth in a series of nine locks that extend the former Rochdale Canal basin at Dale Street to the Bridgewater Canal basin at Castlefield, and it remains in working order. It forms a group with the boundary wall of Canal Street on the north side.
