Description
Rochdale Canal Lock Number 86, located to the east of Chorlton Street in Manchester, was built between 1804 and 1805 for the Rochdale Canal Company and has since been restored. The lock is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and features wooden gates. It has a chamber that is 14 feet wide, with pairs of gates at both ends and a ladder positioned in the center of the south side. This lock is the third in a series of nine locks that extend the former Rochdale Canal basin at Dale Street to the Bridgewater Canal basin at Castlefield, and all are currently in working order. The lock is part of a group that includes the boundary wall of Canal Street on the north side.
