Description

MANCHESTER

SJ8497NW RICHMOND STREET 698-1/32/350 (South side) Nos.51 AND 53

II

Small textiles warehouse or workshop, now warehouse. Probably c.1860, slightly altered. Brown brick in Flemish bond (sides rendered), slate roof. Square plan. Basement and 3 storeys, a 6-window facade, with sill-bands to all floors (that at 1st floor with a simple brick corbel-table), and segmental-headed windows except at 2nd floor; ground floor has simple doorway to right with fixed 4-pane window over the lintel, a square-headed loading doorway next to this with a loading stage and wall-crane to the left, 2 basement windows and a basement doorway at the left end and 3 windows over these; upper floors have 6 windows and 3 round tie-plates between the floors. Chimney at left gable. Interior: very simple construction, with one cast-iron column in the centre of each floor except the top which has a collar-truss; original work-counter under top-floor windows. Unusual example of very small purpose-built warehouse, little altered and still serving the same function.
