Description

51 and 53 Richmond Street is a small textiles warehouse or workshop, now used as a warehouse, likely built around 1860 and slightly altered. The building is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with the sides rendered, and features a slate roof. It has a square plan, a basement, and three storeys, presenting a six-window facade. Each floor has sill-bands, with the first floor featuring a simple brick corbel-table. The windows are segmental-headed, except for those on the second floor.

On the ground floor, there is a simple doorway to the right with a fixed four-pane window above the lintel, and next to it is a square-headed loading doorway with a loading stage and wall-crane to the left. There are two basement windows and a basement doorway at the left end, with three windows above these. The upper floors have six windows and three round tie-plates between the floors. A chimney is located at the left gable.

Inside, the construction is very simple, with one cast-iron column in the center of each floor, except for the top floor which has a collar-truss. There is an original work-counter under the top-floor windows. This building is an unusual example of a very small purpose-built warehouse that has seen little alteration and continues to serve its original function.
