Description

Rochdale Canal Lock Number 85 is a canal lock built between 1804 and 1805 for the Rochdale Canal Company. It has been restored and is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with wooden gates. The lock chamber is 14 feet wide and features pairs of gates at both ends, along with a ladder located in the center of the south side. This lock is the second in a series of nine locks that connect the former Rochdale Canal basin at Dale Street with the Bridgewater Canal basin at Castlefield, and all are in working order.
