Description

Barclays Bank is a bank building dated 1911, designed by Thomas Worthington and Son for the Union Bank of Manchester. It is constructed of Portland stone with a slate roof and is situated on a corner site with a rectangular plan and a chamfered corner. The building is in a classical style and features four storeys and an attic, with four bays facing Piccadilly and an eight-bay return to Chatham Street.

The ground floor has channelled rustication and rusticated quoins at the corners of the upper floors, which are carried across the corner with narrow channelling. There is a sill-band on the third floor and a frieze that includes the inscription "UNION BANK OF SCOTLAND LD / MDCCCCXI / ESTABLISHED ANNO DOMINI MDCCCXXXVI." The prominent modillioned cornice and small pedimented attic dormers add to its architectural detail.

On the ground floor, there is a square-headed doorway at the corner and a round-headed doorway at the left end, along with windows that have cavetto surrounds and keystones. The windows on the front and the first two bays of the side are scrolled. The first and second floors feature 12-pane sashed windows with moulded architraves, with pediments on the first floor and balustraded balconies on the front and the first two side bays. The corner window is set in a round-headed arch with a cornice instead of a pediment and a carved tympanum. The third floor has windows with plain surrounds and roundels between them. The eighth bay of the return side is different, having three storeys and an attic, with a round-headed window on the ground floor and tripartite windows above. The interior has not been inspected.
