Description
The entrance archway and lodge to the yard of the Rochdale Canal Company, built in 1822, is located on Dale Street in Manchester. The structure is made of rusticated sandstone ashlar and features a screen wall that is approximately 10 meters long and 8 meters high, with a small lodge attached to the rear of the north end. Designed in the Gothick style, the screen wall includes a large round-headed archway at the center, with tapered cast-iron bollards protecting the jambs. To the left of the archway is a 12-pane sashed window with a keyed lintel, while a blocked former doorway is situated to the right. Near the top of the wall, there is a full-width rectangular panel with a moulded surround, along with a plain frieze, moulded cornice, and an embattled parapet. The attached lodge features a gate rebate in the side wall, a canted corner with a 12-pane sashed window, a short rear wall with a chamfered doorway, and a moulded cornice topped with an unusual embattled parapet that has circle upstands. At the time of the survey, various large signboards were attached to the front of the structure.
