Description

Industry House is a warehouse and mantle factory, later used as a mail-order warehouse and clothing factory, built in 1913 to a design by WH Longworth. The building is constructed with iron columns and girders, concrete floors, and features a flat concrete roof covered in felt with skylights. The exterior is clad in red brick, with the front facing in buff faience.

The building has a rectangular plan arranged at right angles to the street, with chamfered corners added to the rear. It comprises a basement, five storeys, and an attic. The five-bay front elevation showcases a simplified baroque style. The basement and ground floor are treated as rustic, with channelled piers that extend up to the third floor on the corners, and a frieze containing inlaid gold-coloured lettering reading "FRED W. MILLINGTON LTD". A string course sits above the third floor, and a prominent dentilled cornice is positioned over the fourth floor. The parapet features ornamental upstands over the corners.

The main range features coupled sash windows on all floors. Those on the first and second floors are set within giant architraves with cornices supported by consoles, and panelled aprons between the floors. Above these, the windows have molded architraves. The left corner includes a round-headed doorway with a garlanded triple keystone, leading to a bracketed ornamental balcony supporting a three-story oriel with concave sides. A keyed oculus sits at the top floor, surrounded by swags and festoons, with single-light windows on the sides, the top-floor windows having segmental pediments. The right-hand corner has similar sash windows on the sides and coupled sashes in the central bay. The side walls predominantly feature tripartite-sashed warehouse windows between narrow brick piers. The north side includes staggered stair-windows near the front and a loading bay toward the rear.

The interior entrance lobby has a marble dado and two pedimented mahogany aedicules. The staircase curves around a lift, with glazed tiled walls. At the first turning, a window displays a stained-glass panel featuring a trademark depicting a workman wearing a vest and holding a pickaxe, lettered "I'M WEARING ONE".
