Description

No. 47 Dale Street is a merchants' warehouse, now used as textiles wholesalers' premises. It was built in the later 19th century and has been altered. The building is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond, painted white at the ground floor, with some sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a long, narrow rectangular plan, with a basement and two plus two storeys. The front features four windows and has pilastered corners, a sill-band at the second floor, a terracotta "corbel table" beneath a prominent moulded cornice, and a low parapet.

The doorway in the second bay is flanked by brick pilasters with stone imposts and has a segmental canopy over a decorated lintel, although the door is now covered by a roller blind. To the left of the doorway, a former window has been altered to serve as a doorway. The basement and ground floor windows to the right have fixed plain glazing, with large swags above each window. The upper floors have recessed sashed windows with stone sills and lintels, and there are small bands of saw-toothed and egg-and-dart terracotta decoration above the heads and sills of some windows.

The long south side, facing Lizard Street, is divided into two sections: a six-window range with segmental-headed windows, mostly four-pane sashes, and a continuation that includes four large rectangular former loading doorways, which are mostly blocked or altered, but still show remains of wall-cranes beside the third and fourth doorways. The building continues to the rear, where it forms part of the rear wing of 30 and 32 Hilton Street. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
