Description

No. 45 Dale Street is a merchants' warehouse, now used as clothing wholesalers' premises, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, although the ground floor is now painted white, and features some sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a narrow rectangular plan situated on a corner site, with a basement and two plus two storeys. The front elevation facing Dale Street has three windows, while the side facing Tariff Street has ten windows. Architectural details include a low plinth, a modillioned three-course sill-band at the second floor, bracketed eaves, and a distinctive set-back polychrome-patterned parapet.

The front features a round-headed doorway on the right, framed by brick pilasters with prominent stone imposts and a modillioned segmental cornice made of stone. The windows on the basement and first two floors are set in segmental-headed vertical recesses; the basement windows are blocked, while the first floor has altered glazing at ground level and 4-pane sashes above. The upper floors have 4-pane sashes with gauged brick heads. The ten-bay north side facing Tariff Street has matching window designs. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value with No. 47 to the right.
