Description

Nos. 45 and 47 Newton Street is a textile warehouse, now used as fashion wholesalers' premises, dating from the mid to late 19th century and altered over time. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a gritstone plinth and dressings, with a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the street and includes a loading area in the rear courtyard. It has a basement and five storeys, presenting a very regular 12-window facade. The basement and ground floor are finished in channelled ashlar, which is now painted white. The first and second floors are designed as a giant arcade with segmental-headed arches, and there is a sill-band at the third floor, topped by a plain parapet with stone coping.

No. 47 features a round-headed doorway on the right, flanked by heavy pilaster jambs and a grooved keystone, while No. 45 has an altered doorway. The windows are segmental-headed and decrease in height, with those on the second floor having gritstone sills and panelled aprons set back within the arches. The fourth-floor windows have raised sills, and all windows have altered glazing. The left end of the building includes a wider bay with a rectangular loading entrance at the ground floor and tripartite windows on the two floors above. The rear of the building has sill-bands on the first, second, and third floors, with windows featuring wedge lintels and altered glazing, as well as a wall-crane. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, around 1905, the building was occupied by Mitchell Bros. of Waterfoot, a felt manufacturing company. It forms a group with No. 49 to the right.
