Description

No. 49 Newton Street is a cotton goods warehouse, now used as garment wholesalers' premises, built in the mid to late 19th century and altered over time. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with a gritstone ashlar plinth and dressings. It has a U-shaped plan, featuring a long range parallel to Hilton Street and wings extending to Newton Street and Stevenson Square.

The structure has a basement and five storeys, presenting a six-window facade to Newton Street. The ground floor is rusticated with gritstone, featuring a large round-headed doorway in the fourth bay that has a rusticated cavetto surround, a lion-mask keystone, and a cornice. The windows on this floor have been altered, with the leftmost window now serving as a doorway. The first and second floors contain four-pane sashed windows, with the second-floor windows having raised sills and segmental heads linked by a thin channel at the impost level. The third and fourth floors feature smaller sashes, with the fourth-floor windows being segmental-headed with keystones and linked by a similar channel.

The right-hand return facing Hilton Street has an eleven-window range in a matching style, with a wider central bay that includes a loading entrance at the ground floor and tripartite windows on the first and second floors. The north return to Stevenson Square consists of three matching bays, including a doorway similar to that on Newton Street. At the rear, there is a deep loading slot in the back of the Newton Street range. The interior has not been inspected.
