Description
Dale Street Lock, also known as Lock Number 84 on the Rochdale Canal, was built between 1804 and 1805 for the Rochdale Canal Company and has since been restored. The lock is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and features wooden gates. It has a chamber that is 14 feet wide, with pairs of gates at both ends and a ladder located in the center of the south side. This lock is the first in a series of nine locks that connect the former Rochdale Canal basin at Dale Street to the Bridgewater Canal basin at Castlefield, and all are still in working order. Dale Street Lock is part of a group that includes the nearby Dale Street Warehouse.
