Description

The south entrance, including gates, piers, and railings to Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, was built in 1856 by Thomas Moore. This entrance features painted cast-iron piers and railings, with ashlar piers supporting the flanking walls and brick dwarf walls topped with ashlar coping. The design is in the Perpendicular style. The open octagonal cast-iron gate piers have a central ornamental band and brattished decoration on the high swept coping, which is adorned with bud finials. The gates include dog bars beneath a pierced quatrefoil band and lozenge-shaped bud finials. Serpentine walls with chamfered ashlar coping support the railings, which ramp up to the piers and feature a similar pierced band above shorter dog bars, along with matching finials. Painted ashlar octagonal piers flank the serpentine entrance walls and also display brattished ornament on the high coping.
