Description
The Central Chapel at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery is a chapel built in 1856, designed by Thomas Moore. It is one of a pair of identical chapels intended for Anglican and Non-Conformist use within the municipal cemetery. The chapel is constructed of brick with an ashlar plinth and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring fishscale decoration, ashlar gable copings, and a bellcote.
The chapel is oriented geographically with the ritual east end. It consists of a nave and sanctuary, with a north vestry, west porch, and southwest chapel. The high four-light east window is framed by a stone surround with a dripmould and decorated tracery beneath the east gable. The three-bay nave and one-bay sanctuary are fitted with lancet windows that have dripmoulds over plain stone surrounds, separated by stepped gabled buttresses.
The southwest octagonal chapel features alternating lancets and a door on its sides, beneath a high hipped roof that includes lucarnes above the windows and door. The west porch, flanked by lancets, has a long ogee dripmould over the door, which is set in a moulded pointed arch beneath a gable supported by gabled angle buttresses. Behind the porch, an octagonal projection rises to a shafted octagonal bellcote with two tiers of gabled arcaded sides and a stone spirelet. The steeply pitched roof displays bands of fishscale patterns and gable copings.
At the time of the survey, most openings were blocked, and the building was out of use.
