Description
The North Lodge of Sunderland Cemetery is a lodge for a municipal cemetery, built around 1858. It is constructed from snecked limestone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings and chimneys. Designed in the Gothic style, the building has an L-plan and is a single storey with two bays at the front, including a porch at the angle. The gabled porch has a four-centred chamfered surround to a boarded door, which is adorned with elaborate cast-iron hinges. The right bay projects and contains pointed stone mullion lights in a canted window topped with a hipped roof under the gable. The left bay, which faces the cemetery drive, has trefoil and plain sash windows. There are mask-stopped cornices above the canted window and at the eaves. The building is topped with tall, round, corniced stone ridge chimneys set on stepped plinths.
