Description
The South Chapel of Sunderland Cemetery is a chapel located in a municipal cemetery, built around 1858. It features snecked limestone with an ashlar plinth and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof and stone gable copings. The chapel has an aisled nave with a northeast tower porch, designed in the Decorated style, which includes buttresses and tracery. The gabled nave is adorned with 4-light east and west windows that are partly blocked and have cusped geometric tracery. At the eastern end, there is a small pentagonal north aisle, likely serving as a vestry, which contains 2-light windows. The south aisle features a 4-centred-arched west door, while the northeast open-arched porch is flanked by large stepped buttresses and high moulded pointed arches with dripstrings. Above these arches are cusped triangular lights, and the coping steps back to an octagonal second stage with gabled canopies over blocked single cusped lights. The chapel originally had a spire, which has since been removed. The gables are finished with overlapping stone coping. At the time of the survey, the chapel was out of use and is included in the register for its group value only.
