NZ45SW RYHOPE ROAD 920-1/7/197 (West side (off)) South Chapel of Sunderland Cemetery

Chapel in municipal cemetery. c1858. Snecked limestone with ashlar plinth and dressings; Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings. Aisled nave with NE tower porch. Decorated style with buttresses and tracery. Gabled nave has 4-light E and W windows, partly blocked, with cusped geometric tracery; small pent N aisle at E end probably vestry, has 2-light windows; 4-centred-arched W door in gabled S aisle; NE open-arched porch has big stepped buttresses flanking high moulded pointed arches with dripstrings; similar strings and mouldings to cusped triangular lights above; coping steps back to octagonal second stage with gabled canopies over blocked single cusped lights; top cornice; spire removed. Gables have overlapping stone coping. Out of use at time of survey. Included for group value only.
