Description
The cemetery gatepiers and gates were built in 1869 by Henry Styan of Manchester and James Farrar, the Borough Surveyor. They are designed in a Neo-Gothic style. The structure features four stone piers that resemble large pinnacles, each with gables and shallow buttresses on every face. The elaborate carvings, created by Mr. Bonehill of Manchester, include angels holding inscribed scrolls beneath the gables of the larger inner piers. The central double gates and the flanking single gates reflect the Lancet head design found in the railings that top the quadrant walls on either side, which are made of coursed rubble with peaked coping.
