Description
The Corner House Hotel is a notable mid-Victorian Gothic building located at the prominent corner of Park Street and Wellington Road. It features two storeys plus attics and is constructed of red brick with alternating yellow bricks used for the voussoirs, complemented by ashlar dressings. The design is symmetrical, with two gabled wings on each front, and the inner wings are set back. The building is adorned with stone cappings, finials, and carved heads on the kneelers of the gables, one of which has a brick stack. The roof is decorated with patterned tiles, and the eaves are supported by brackets.
A weathered stringcourse and plinth enhance the structure's appearance. On the outer corner, there is a small oriel window with a carved cornice and corbel, alongside a second oriel to the right that features a traceried central light. The windows beneath the west gables are recessed and topped with tall pointed strainer arches. Large openwork ashlar balconies are present at the first-floor windows facing west, with the left gable balcony supported by a projecting bay and the right one on elaborate curved brackets. Most windows are grouped lancets with deep mouldings, and those on the west front include shafts and foliage capitals, with oculi in the spandrels of the projecting bay. The south front features paired windows with traceried heads to the right. The entrance is through a pointed archway with carved imposts, situated under a two-storey porch on the south front. A low modern extension to the right is not included in the listing. The Corner House Hotel is an important end building in the terrace that runs east to St John's Church.
All the listed buildings in Park Street, except for St Paul's House, form a group with Nos 2 to 18 (even) Wellington Road.
