Description
This is a mid-19th century section of a Gothic terrace of exceptional quality, set back from Park Street. The terrace is more ornate than the one to the east. It comprises two storeys plus attics and basements. The building is constructed of ashlar, with multi-coloured insets. The end bays project slightly and are topped with square pyramidal turrets. The steeply pitched slate roof is patterned and features four gabled dormers in the centre, as well as ridge cresting. An openwork balustrade, featuring pierced quatrefoils and supported by an eaves cornice on trefoiled brackets, runs along the top. The centre of the front is divided by pilaster buttresses with shafts and foliated capitals, and a stringcourse runs horizontally. The windows are lancets with trefoiled heads, grouped in ones, twos, and threes. Windows of three lights are fitted with openwork stone balconettes on brackets. The attics in the end gables have paired lights set beneath quatrefoils. Large, canted bays with stone transoms and mullions are on the ground floor, although the end bay on the right has been altered. Three doorways are located in the centre of the front, sheltered by gabled stone canopies supported by marble shafts with crocket capitals. The large wooden doors are accessed by steps and have strapwork hinges. The side doorways have hoodmoulds and paterae in the voussoirs. The terrace is a significant part of the wider architectural group encompassing the Corner House Hotel and St John's Church. The listed buildings in Park Street, together with numbers 2 to 18 (even) on Wellington Road, also form a group.
