Description

Bellevue Terrace is a terrace of eight houses, designed symmetrically with Gothic detailing that became popular in Rhyl around the late 19th century. The buildings are smoothly rendered with painted stone dressings and feature slate roofs with ridge cresting. The terrace has an asymmetrical two-window range, with outer doorways and two-storey canted bay windows set beneath steep, slightly advanced gables. The gables are paired, aligning the doorways of the central six dwellings.

Each house has round-arched doorways with stepped moulding and fluted pilasters at the paired central entrances. Heavy brackets support entablature hoods topped with cast iron brattishing. Above the doors, round-arched windows are framed by stressed architraves with keystones. The gables have angle quoins and two-storey canted bay windows topped with a heavy cornice on each floor. There is a round-arched window in the apex of each gable, some of which have been renewed. The windows throughout the terrace feature marginal glazing bars. The eaves overhang on moulded brackets, and the gable roofs have bargeboards with finials, although some finials are missing.

Bellevue Terrace is one of the earliest examples of Gothic-style terraces in Rhyl, likely intended for use as lodging houses from the beginning. It holds significant importance for the character of Rhyl in the latter part of the 19th century and is the best surviving example that retains most of its original character.
