Description
The Warden's House, built between 1888 and 1889 by Charles Bell, is a house for the Warden of Wesley Memorial Church in Epworth. The building features rock-faced ashlar on the front and sides, with yellow brick at the rear, and has ashlar dressings throughout. It has a Welsh slate roof and is T-shaped in plan, comprising two storeys.
The north front includes an entrance in a single-bay range to the left, with a projecting single-bay gabled wing to the right. The façade has a chamfered plinth and quoins. The doorway is chamfered and has a rounded trefoil shape beneath a pointed hoodmould with carved stops. The door itself is a board door adorned with ornate wrought ironwork. Above the door, there is a small single-light sash window in a quoined surround. The wing to the right features a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor, both with chamfered mullions and reveals, quoined surrounds, segmental relieving arches, and sashes that have four small panes over two larger panes. The gables are coped with shaped kneelers and trefoil finials. An axial stack with an offset and ashlar shaft is also present.
The Warden's House is part of an unusually ornate group of Methodist buildings, which were constructed in memory of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and the Wesley family of Epworth. It is included in the register for its group value.
