Description

Harbour Lights is an early 19th century house, later altered to include a shop. It is situated on the north side of High Street, Epworth. The building is constructed of brick, with a front facade of fine red stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The roof is covered in concrete tiles. The building follows a double-depth plan, with a two-room front and a central entrance hall. It is two storeys high and comprises three bays. A rendered plinth is present.

The central entrance to No. 52 features a step leading to a doorcase with slim ribbed pilasters, dosserets, a ribbed frieze, cornice, and a hood. A 20th century part-glazed door sits beneath the cornice, with a plain overlight above. To the right, at No. 50, is a shop front with a half-glazed panelled door and a plain overlight. A window to the right of the door has two panes below three smaller panes, set within a pilastered surround and topped with an unsympathetic 20th century name board. An original 16-pane sash window is located to the left, set within a flush wooden architrave with a sill and beneath a stucco flat arch. The first floor has 16-pane sashes in the side bays, and a 12-pane sash above the entrance, all in similar surrounds. A dentil brick eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. A stone-coped gable is present on the left, with shaped kneelers. Corniced end stacks are also visible.

The left return has a 12-pane ground-floor sash window in a similar surround to the front windows.

Inside, there is an open-well closed-string staircase with a slender ramped handrail and stick balusters, along with moulded cornices and six-fielded-panel doors in architraves.

The building is included on the list for its group value.
