Description

15 and 16 Fossgate is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating back to around 1600 with alterations made in the late 17th century and a rear wing added. The shopfront was updated in the late 19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. The original structure is timber-framed with a white-washed plaster front, featuring a timber door hood, shopfront, and guttering. The building has a brick wing and tiled roofs on both sections, with a brick stack at the right end of the front roof.

The exterior showcases a three-storey, two-bay front with jettied upper storeys. The shopfront includes grooved pilasters with moulded imposts on tall faceted pedestals, and a deep projecting fascia situated between grooved and gableted consoles. There is a glazed and panelled door with a shaped lintel carved with the initials MD, flanked by plate glass windows set between colonnette jambs with moulded capitals and carved spandrels, above raised panel risers. A passage entrance with a panelled door is located at the left end, sheltered by a ribbed shell hood featuring a lion mask boss on shaped brackets. The first floor has tripartite bow windows with a 16-pane centre sash, while the second floor has 3-light 8-pane casement windows.

Inside, the ground floor of the front building reveals some exposed wall studding, ceiling beams, and joists. A rebuilt brick fireplace may cover an earlier one.
