Description

42 and 43 Fossgate are a pair of houses that have been converted into shops. They were built in 1825, with No. 42 incorporating a structure from the 15th century. No. 43 underwent restoration and partial demolition in the 20th century, and both have new shopfronts. The buildings are constructed of orange-cream brick in Flemish bond, with a stuccoed timber-framed structure at the rear and a brick stack on a pantile roof.

The exterior features a three-storey, two-window front. The shopfronts are pilastered, with small-pane windows and doors that have decorative overlights. No. 42 has a tripartite sash window with a four-pane center window on the first floor, and two 16-pane sashes on the second floor, all with painted sills and channelled wedge lintels that have grooved keyblocks. No. 43 has an inserted bow window with eight, twelve, and eight-pane sashes on the first floor, and one 16-pane sash with a painted sill and a flat arch made of orange brick on the second floor. There is a fluted inverted bell rainwater head, initialled "IN," at the right end of a plain eaves band.

At the rear, a two-storey, two-bay block projects, featuring two first-floor windows with two by four panes; one has horizontal sliding sashes, and the other has casements. The roof includes one crown post truss. The interior has not been inspected.
