Description
23 Fossgate is a house with a shop that dates from the early 19th century, although it has earlier origins and has undergone later alterations and an extension. The front is made of painted brick in Flemish bond, featuring a shopfront and timber eaves guttering. The sides are constructed of orange brick, while the rear is tile-hung. The roof has a shallow pitch, with tiles at the front and pantiles at the rear, and a brick stack at the left end.
The exterior has a three-storey, two-window front. The plain shopfront includes pilasters and a fascia supported by grooved consoles, with a recessed glazed and panelled door and overlight situated between plate glass windows. The first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes that have slender glazing bars and painted stone sills. All windows feature flat arches, with those on the second floor partially obscured by an eaves band and box guttering supported by paired modillion brackets. The interior has not been inspected.
