Description

11 and 12 Fossgate is a house and former fishmonger's shop, now a restaurant, dated 1898 with a 20th-century shopfront. The building is constructed of red brick in English garden-wall bond, featuring dressings of moulded brick and buff faience, topped with a pantile roof and brick stacks.

The exterior displays a two-storey, three-bay front, with the central bay featuring a pediment. The shopfront includes plate glass windows, a central doorway, and an upstairs door located at the right end. The upper floor is defined by pilasters with moulded sunk panels that enclose a floral motif, raised on pedestals with moulded coping that extends across the full width of the outer bays. The entablature consists of a panelled frieze and a moulded dentilled cornice beneath a panelled parapet, which is interrupted by pedestal piers topped with ball finials. The frieze and parapet panels are moulded with garlands of fruit.

The central bay features a scrolled pediment with a moulded eagle finial and a tympanum that incorporates the date, the monogram of YAC, and the York City shield of arms set within palm fronds. The central window is recessed beneath an elliptical arch with a grooved keyblock, supported by four orders of colonnettes with moulded capitals. This window is a canted bay with an Ipswich window in the centre, also beneath a scrolled pediment. The outer bays have cross-windows with casements beneath flat arches made of rubbed brick, featuring grooved keyblocks and moulded sunk panels below that incorporate garlanded fruits. A fine scrolled bracket at the centre of the first floor supports a pendant lantern. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value as an integral part of Fossgate.
