Description

No. 30 Pavement, along with Nos. 55 and 56 Fossgate, is a row of three houses that have been converted into one shop. The buildings date from around 1796, with the shopfronts for No. 30 being from the late 19th century and those for Nos. 55 and 56 dating to around 1955.

The construction features buff-grey brick laid in Flemish bond, with orange rubbed brick dressings. There is a timber cornice with dentil and modillion detailing, and truncated brick stacks on a hipped slate roof. The 20th-century shopfront is made of teak, stainless steel, and granite veneer.

The exterior has a three-storey, six-bay front. The shopfront for Nos. 55 and 56 Fossgate is continuous with No. 54 and includes plate glass windows and doors with bevelled glass and overlights. The shopfront for No. 30 Pavement is framed by fluted pilasters with moulded imposts on panelled pedestals, topped by a coved frieze and a moulded cornice with dentilled capping, which is interrupted by carved grooved brackets and segmental gablets. The double doors are panelled and made of bevelled glass, curved at the corner, and flanked by plate glass windows set over granite veneer risers. The first-floor windows are tall 12-pane sashes, while the second floor features unequal 9-pane sashes, with the outer windows being tripartite on both floors. A dated rainwater head with the initials TW is located at the left end of the eaves cornice.

On the pavement front, there are three storeys with one window. The first-floor window is a 16-pane sash, and the second floor has an unequal 12-pane sash. All windows have painted stone sills and flat arches.

The interior of the shop contains early 20th-century fittings. No. 30 Pavement was first listed on July 1, 1968.
