Description
No 2 and 4 Swan Street are two houses that have been converted into shops, dating from around 1800 and altered since then. The buildings are made of red brick, with No 4 constructed in English bond and No 2 in Flemish bond. They have a 20th-century cement-tile roof and are two storeys high with attics, featuring one window for No 2 and five windows for the first floor of No 4.
No 2 has a part-glazed door with an overlight in a wooden doorcase, flanked by three-light shop windows that have been inserted. There is a window in the position of a former doorway on the right, which retains a three-pane overlight and a flat brick arch. The first floor has a brick band, and 20th-century casements with glazing bars beneath flat brick arches in bays one, three, and five, with the outer windows widened. Bays two and four have blind windows with flat brick arches.
No 4 features steps leading to a part-glazed, panelled door on the right of a shop window that has a bowed casement with glazing bars. The first floor has a band beneath a 20th-century casement with glazing bars. The roof includes a dormer window with a casement over No 4 and two roof lights over No 2, along with a rebuilt brick end stack on the left. The buildings are included for their group value.
