Description
The building is a dovecote and stable block located behind No. 9 Swan Street, now serving as store and commercial premises. It was constructed around 1800 and has been altered since then. The structure is made of red brick in English garden wall bond with a sheet asbestos roof.
The dovecote is three stories high and consists of one bay, flanked by narrow two-story side bays that connect to two-story wings projecting forward; the right wing extends by three bays and the left by one bay. The dovecote features a central boarded stable door with an overlight beneath a shallow wedge lintel, a square window opening on the left, and a bricked-up opening on the right with a low segmental arch. On the first floor, there is a bricked-up central window with a projecting sill and wedge lintel. The second floor has a band beneath a lunette with a deep sill and a 20th-century casement window, along with a dentilled band beneath the gable that includes a blind oculus.
The left side bay, which is set back, has inserted garage doors below an iron casement window with glazing bars and a wedge lintel; the attached wing on the left features a 20th-century casement window and a gabled end, with a doorway in its short right return. The right side bay, also set back, includes garage doors beneath a first-floor loading door. The right wing, which houses the premises of J. H. M. Butt Ltd, has altered ground floor openings on its left return, with a central loading door flanked by 20th-century casements, all featuring wedge lintels. The roof has dentilled eaves and a hipped front end.
Inside, the stable beneath the dovecote has a cobbled floor and three round-arched feeding-rack recesses, while the dovecote itself is lined with brick nesting holes. This building was originally part of the courtyard buildings associated with the Swan Hotel, which has since been demolished. An addition to the front of the right-hand wing is not of special interest.
