Description

34 and 36 Church Street are two adjoining houses, with No. 34 functioning as a shop at the time of listing. They date from the mid to late 18th century, with No. 36 altered in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, while No. 36 has a roughcast finish, both topped with pantile roofs. The layout is T-shaped, with No. 36 on the left consisting of two storeys and featuring two windows on the first floor. No. 34 is a two-storey-and-attic structure with a one-bay crosswing on the right.

No. 34, from the late 18th century, has sash windows with glazing bars on each floor, which have projecting stone sills and segmental brick arches. It has a hipped roof with a casement window in a gabled roof dormer and a cement-rendered ridge stack. On the left side, there are steps leading to a six-panelled door beneath a segmental arch.

No. 36, from the earlier 18th century, features a 20th-century door flanked by bowed 20th-century casements with glazing bars, and two 20th-century casements on the first floor. It has dentilled brick eaves, a raised verge on the left gable with a small end stack, and a large rendered ridge stack above the doorway.

No. 36 is included for its group value with No. 34.
