Description

27 St Andrew Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with an earlier structure from the 15th century located at the rear. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with old tile roofs and features a red brick chimneystack on the outshoot.

The exterior is two storeys high. The front elevation includes a flush-set three-light small-paned wood casement window on the first floor. The ground floor has an early 19th-century cornice with a flat modillion soffit and a dentil course above the fascia, which projects outward on the right and has a splayed corner on the left, leading to an entrance door accessed from a side passage. There is a 20th-century glazed door and an oriel shop window supported by brackets above a yellow brick riser. The long elevation on the left side features scattered fenestration of small-paned wood casement windows, including two early 20th-century canted oriel bays on the first floor.

The interior suggests that this building was likely a single bay of a longer structure that was demolished around 1840 to make way for Nos 29 and 31. The ground and first floors have been opened up into continuous display areas, revealing long jowled posts, beams, and some bracing visible to the tie beam of the current party wall with No. 29. The roof features halved and pegged rafters and side purlins. The long rear outshoot contains the earlier 15th-century framed structure, which has been significantly altered, with the most visible changes occurring at the first-floor level.
