Description

144 and 145 High Street is a house with a shop, built around the 1870s. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a tiled roof. The building has three storeys and is arranged with two windows on each side. The windows have plain sashes with segmental heads and keystones, set on deep stone sills supported by brackets.

The ground floor showcases a prominent shop front with a deep recessed central entrance featuring glazed doors, which are positioned behind the main fascia supported by two slender cast-iron columns. To the left of the shop front is a well-designed panelled door topped with a transom light and a segmental head. The fascia has a moulded cornice and a raised segmental pediment above the main doors, complemented by heavy console brackets. Above the fascia, there is a full-width band of interlaced decoration just below the first-floor sills. The building also has yellow brick flush cill and head bands at each level, along with a modillion eaves, cornice, blocking course, and a coped parapet. Brick stacks are located on both the left and right sides.

The interior has not been inspected. This building is a later addition to the High Street, designed to harmonize with the scale of nearby properties while showcasing a bold late Victorian style, particularly evident in its shop front design. It is included for its group value.
