Description
No. 147 High Street is a house with a shop, dating from the early to mid-18th century, although it incorporates earlier elements. The building features Flemish bond brickwork and an asbestos-cement slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and has two windows on the front. Above the parapet, there is a distinctive paired dormer with moulded eaves leading to a hipped roof, which is split at the centre but has a continuous small-pane casement front. The first and second floors are fitted with plain sash windows that have moulded exposed boxes, brick voussoirs, and stone cills. The shop front, dating from the 19th century, includes pilasters and a central glazed door beneath a transom light, with a deep 20th-century fascia supported by console brackets. There is a three-course brick band above the first floor and a two-course band above the second floor, topped by a high parapet with coping. The steep roof, aligned parallel to the street, indicates that there may be earlier fabric behind the rebuilt front. The brickwork has been repointed with light mortar, and there are six iron ties running through the structure, which shows signs of settlement in the facade. The interior has not been inspected.
