Description

No. 106 Church Street is a house with a shop, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with possible earlier 16th-century elements. It features Flemish bond brickwork, a slate or tile roof, and a brick chimney stack. The building has a wide street front that is parallel to the road, with a deep wing extending to the back on the right and an angled stair turret on the left. It is situated on a wedge-shaped site where Church Street curves into High Street. The structure has three storeys and an attic, with a three-window arrangement. The windows are four-pane sashes set in moulded face boxes, with rubbed brick voussoirs and fluted keystones, as well as stone sills. The ground floor includes a late 20th-century plate-glass recessed shop front, flanked by an intermediate brick pier. The building is topped with a moulded stone cornice, a blocking course, and a coped parapet above a mansard roof that has a slate front and a tiled back, featuring a small hipped dormer on the right. The left side has a rendered gable with a coped verge, and there is a large brick stack on the right. At the back, there is an early two-light gabled dormer and a deep wing with a steep tiled mansard roof. The full-height stair turret on the right is set at an angle to the main building and has a slated roof. The interior has not been inspected, but a previous listing mentions 16th-century panelling and a staircase with twisted balusters and square newels.
