Description
No. 154 High Street is a Grade II* listed house that dates from the late 15th century. It is part of a row of buildings, functioning as a shop and a residence. The house is timber-framed, with a brick facade at the front and brick or plaster panels at the rear, topped with a tile roof and featuring a brick chimney stack.
The building is small and double-jettied, with a single room depth, situated on a narrow site. The staircase is located at the back corner, and there is a fireplace on the party wall shared with No. 155.
In terms of its exterior, the house stands three storeys tall with a basement and has two windows. The first and second floors feature 4-pane sash windows set in moulded boxes, while the ground floor has a 19th-century shop front with pilasters, console brackets, a fascia, and a moulded cornice, along with a central recessed door. The top floor displays exposed corner posts and jetty joists, and the left gable has exposed framing with a very small window on the second floor. The eaves are moulded, and there is a large central brick stack from the 17th century. The rear wall shows large exposed studs and tension bracing, with an 18th-century two-light leaded casement at the eaves level and a 4-pane sash window on the first and ground floors.
Inside, the property retains its exposed timber frame with tension bracing, and there is an inserted timber-framed cross wall on the second floor. The 18th-century winder staircase and joinery feature original brass fittings on the panelled doors. The roof is a single bay with heavy windbraces supporting chamfered clasped purlins and a close-studded left gable end. This house was built as a pair with No. 155, though it has undergone more external modifications.
