Description
141 High Street is a narrow frontage row house dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some elements from the 17th century. The front is made of rendered brickwork, while the rear is timber-framed, topped with a tiled roof. The building has a two-room right-angle plan featuring a central stairwell and rises four storeys with a single window on each level. The third floor has a 9-pane sash window above a 12-pane sash at the second floor, and a modified 12-pane window with a shallow transom-light addition at the first floor. The mid-19th century shop front features a moulded cill, a radiused plate-glass return, a set-back door to the left, and a panelled reveal beneath a glass fascia with gilding. The party wall shares eaves and modillion details with the adjacent property, No. 140.
Inside, there is an early 19th century dogleg stair with stick balusters, an uncut string, and column balusters. An early 18th century framed newel stair leads to the attic, which features simple column-on-vase balusters. The attic contains four well-crafted 17th century carved foliate timber modillions on the left-hand wall from No. 140, along with 18th century fielded panelling on the partition with the stair.
